We welcome Dr. María Costales Marcos, an otolaryngologist and expert in otology and the genetic diagnosis of hereditary hearing loss, as Dreamgenics’ new medical advisor.
Dr. Costales received her Bachelor of Medicine degree from the University of Oviedo in 2007 and earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the same university in 2012. She completed her residency in Otorhinolaryngology at the Central Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) between 2008 and 2012, and in 2015 she was recognized as a Fellow of the European Board of Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, an accreditation that validates her training and competencies at the European level. During 2014–2015, she also held a “Río Hortega” Research Fellowship at HUCA, a period during which she combined research activities with clinical practice as a part-time ENT Resident.
Following her research career, Dr. Costales expanded her clinical experience in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital (2016–2018). Since November 2018, she has held the position of full-time Assistant Physician in Otolaryngology at HUCA, carrying out her clinical work and contributing to the specialized care of patients with ear disorders.
Her areas of interest include otology and cochlear implants, as well as the genetic study of hearing loss. The combination of surgical and clinical experience in cochlear implants with a strong research background in genetics makes Dr. Costales a professional who is particularly well-equipped to address current challenges in the diagnosis and management of hearing loss. Her profile combines the clinical insight and diagnostic precision required by personalized medicine: identifying the genetic causes of hearing loss not only guides prognosis but also informs therapeutic decisions—including cochlear implant candidacy, family counseling, and access to targeted treatments—and improves patient care.
Dr. Costales notes:“Genetics has profoundly changed our understanding of hearing loss. An accurate genetic diagnosis allows us not only to explain the cause of hearing loss, but also to develop a personalized treatment plan and provide genetic counseling to families.”
Carlos Martínez, CEO of Dreamgenics, adds: “The addition of Dr. Costales as a medical advisor reinforces our commitment to clinical excellence and the application of precision genetics in otology. Her extensive experience in genetic hearing loss will bring significant value to our services, helping us offer otolaryngologists and patients more comprehensive diagnostic tools applicable in daily clinical practice, with the ultimate goal of improving diagnosis and the quality of life for people with hearing loss.”
